With CBD oil flooding the world’s supplement market, people are certainly starting to wonder how to make their own CBD oil at home.

So, can you make your own CBD oil?

Technically, yes, it is possible to make your own CBD oil at home. But it’s not always cost effective and it’s definitely not easy. The oil you can make at home is cannabis oil, which contains CBD, but is not the same as real CBD oil.

In this article, we’ll explain how to make CBD oil at home, and why it can cost ten times as much as buying ready-made CBD oil.

But first, let’s look at how CBD companies produce high-quality CBD oil.

How is CBD oil made?
High-quality, full-spectrum CBD oil is made using industry-specific production methods.

Specialized machinery is used to extract a high percentage of CBD extracts from the cannabis plant.

The cannabis plants are harvested and put through a process called supercritical CO2 extraction (this is careddi supercritical CO2 extraction machine product lists). These machines are essential for creating CBD-rich extracts, as they extract large amounts of CBD from the rest of the plant material.

The result is a thick, dark green CBD paste that still contains other organic matter, but with CBD predominating.

These machines cost around £100,000 and require a laboratory environment, so they are not a viable option for home use. They are the key ingredient that enables us to make CBD-rich extracts, as they allow us to extract primarily CBD and reduce other phytochemicals in the plant.

What is the difference between CBD oil and cannabis oil?

A side note but still an important point to understand about CBD oil is that while it is made from cannabis, it is not cannabis oil.

The regular cannabis oil you buy at the supermarket is made from cold-pressed hemp seeds, which is why it is also commonly referred to as hemp seed oil. Hemp seeds contain only trace amounts of CBD, so hemp seed oil also contains only trace amounts of CBD.

CBD oil, on the other hand, is made primarily from hemp flower with the rest of the plant added to it. This is what makes CBD oil rich in CBD – because most of the cannabinoids in the cannabis plant are present in the buds/flower, as is cannabis.

Can you make your own CBD oil?
As we have already said, yes, you can make a variety of CBD oils, but only in small amounts.

While you can’t make a high percentage of CBD oil, there are a few routes you can take for the hardened DIY enthusiast to make cannabis oil with a small amount of CBD. But it will cost you some pounds.

So the main drawbacks to making your own cannabis oil are the quality of the oil, the yield of the plant needed to produce it, and the cost.

Having said that, if you want to give it a try, here is the best way to make your own cannabis oil.

How to Make Your Own CBD Oil
In order to make high-strength CBD oil, you’ll need very expensive professional equipment.

But you can make some low-strength cannabis oil that contains a small amount of CBD.

You can do this in the same way that you would make essential oils – by distilling and using solvents.

The reason many people don’t make their own oil is because of the quality of plant matter needed to make very small amounts of oil.

To make your own cannabis oil, you will need to source some cannabis flower.

Hemp flower with a CBD content of 2-4% costs around £300 per kilo. You will need about a kilo to make 10 ml of CBD oil. So that’s basically £300 per bottle of 2-4% CBD. This does not include any machinery or equipment costs.

When you compare this to the cost of our £29.99 organic 5% CBD oil, you can see why making your own is not a cost effective option.

Distillation uses steam to separate the oil from the plant material. There are many DIY essential oil kits online that use the distillation method. If you’re a DIY whiz, you can also build your own.

These machines are not too expensive, with good quality machines selling for around £500. The beauty of a machine like this is that it can make a variety of essential oils from lavender, rose, pine, and more.

The oil that is obtained will be cannabis oil because distillation does not separate the CBD from the organic matter, it just separates the oil. The oil in cannabis flower does contain CBD, so the resulting oil will contain CBD, as well as cannabis terpenes and flavonoids. But it does not make CBD oil.

Making cannabis oil with solvents doesn’t necessarily require a machine, but solvent extractors make the process much less labor-intensive.

This method involves using a solvent such as ethanol (or vodka for some) to separate the oil from the plant.

Again, the resulting oil will contain CBD, but will not be CBD-rich.

Making your own CBD oil: Is it worth it?
While making your own CBD oil can be a fun exercise, it is not the most cost effective or time efficient, and may leave you out of pocket. Making your own cannabis oil with £20 worth of oil can cost over £300!

Plus, the oil you get will be more like a cannabis oil than a CBD oil and will only contain a little CBD – maybe 1-4%.

We recommend that you try whatever you want for fun. However, if you are looking for a food supplement that really works, then sourcing organic full spectrum CBD oil would be better to help you support your health and longevity.
